or Vision serpent emerges from the soup of dreams , a flint of understanding flickering through the rippling dark.
Obisidian, organic cochineal, blood, ritual ash, organic mayan blue (handmade), plaster, marble, acrylic, oil, aerosol, acetone, damar varnish, uv stablizers on stretched canvas.
Another piece created for Pilotenkeuche on residency in Leipzig--this one inspired by Mesoamerican uses and beliefs constellating around obsidian and magic. A pyramidal structure was built and elaborated with geometrics pulled from the site of Mitla in Oaxaca. An archeologically accurate portrait of Tezcatlipoca, the god of magic and obsidian, was sourced from the codices, submerged under paint then partially excavated. In keeping with the practice of auto-sacrifice, I bled myself onto pieces of paper which I then burned, saving the ash as pigment and making paint from it. I recreated the day-sign Tecpatl, the flint obsidian blade that any reader of mayan glyphs will recognize. The dynamic, shifting, powerful surface of a crystal ball. A smoking mirror of potent magic. A ritual for the night.
