,or If there were a geology of paint humanity would find a way to mine it.
Made from concrete, sand, utility paint, rocks, plaster, house paint, dirt, glitter, acrylic, aerosol, oil, damar resin, uv archival spray on stretched canvas.
The earth’s geology—and humanity’s ongoing and dynamic relationship to it—is one of my biggest inspirations. To make this piece I spent years building a topography of paint, selectively exposing different strata. I then built an intrusive, angular triangle out of concrete and coated it in generous glossy black paint. I wanted to convey the mechanistic simplicity of human machinery alongside the explosive variety of rocks. Geologies of paint are some of my most persistent fantasies as an artist, but I can’t help but think if there really were mountain ranges of paint, we’d find a way to extract every last resource out of them.
